Our team was recently called upon to complete a Family Room Makeover for a retired couple with young grandchildren. Here’s how we did it.
Family Room Makeover Design Brief:
- create built-in cabinetry to house the TV and media equipment, and add a fireplace
- replace oversize sofa and chairs with right-sized furnishings
- replace broadloom with hardwood flooring
- update the decor and colour scheme
- keep it family-friendly for the grandkids
Family Room Design Solution:
Custom Cabinetry was designed and installed around the existing audio equipment, which was already wired into position. An electric fireplace, the Dimplex BLF50, was added below the TV, with space above it for the media equipment. A cupboard above the TV hides a speaker and provides extra storage. Open shelves accommodate books, toys and collectibles. Note the pirate ship in the lower right corner! Finishing the cabinetry to match the wall colour keeps it from overwhelming the space. LED lighting in the top of the cabinets adds much-needed illumination to that end of the room.
Custom Sofas in deep raisin brown replaced the dark navy pieces. They are scaled for the room, and are covered in a durable fabric that cleans up with water. The sofa incorporates a pull-out bed for visitors. A low maintenance rug offers pattern and contrast, as well as a soft landing for little ones.
Custom Window Coverings add a pop of colour to the space, including deep persimmon red and bright peacock blue. Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades offer privacy when needed, and disappear behind the valance to reveal a view of the garden. Bright colours are repeated on the sofa pillows.
New Tiffany-style ceiling fixtures, as well as floor lamps, boost the brightness of the space, as well as adding warmth.
Our clients had this to say about the makeover: “Jeanne provided us with excellent service, envisioning what we could not see! Our family room came together perfectly and is now a room we enjoy being in.”
