On-wall linear electric fireplaces have all the beauty of an in-wall linear electric fireplace, but with mounting hardware that allows them to be surface-mounted. In fact, many linear on-wall electric fireplaces may also be installed in the wall. However, this is not always the case, so be sure you confirm the installation before you purchase. Some on-wall electric fireplaces are designed with 3-sided glass, to enhance the view from all angles. There are also compact on-wall electric fireplaces that are perfect for tight spaces.

On-Wall or In-Wall? Which do I need?

Tips for deciding which linear fireplace option is best.

You can install an On-wall fireplace just about anywhere, as long as there is enough support behind the wall. You will also need to be close enough to an electrical outlet to plug in the fireplace. Note that most fireplace cords are about 72” long, and should not be connected to an extension cord.

You can install an In-Wall fireplace if you are building a new wall or a new cabinet, and you can make space for the fireplace to fit into this new structure. Note that you will need to have electrical inside the wall or cabinet.

You can also install an In-Wall fireplace if you are able to cut into an existing wall and frame an opening for the fireplace to fit into. Note: this is not advisable on an exterior wall of your home, as it would require you to break the building envelope and remove insulation. It is also not usually possible in a condo wall.

Can’t all On-Wall Linear Electric Fireplaces also be installed In-Wall?

Why you need to know how you are going to install before you buy.

Some On-Wall linear fireplaces may also be installed In-Wall. If the heat blows out the front of the fireplace, it may be possible to mount it in the wall. However, that is not the only consideration, as electric fireplaces also need to draw air in, and those air intake vents are positioned with correct installation in mind. Always read the owners’ manual carefully to understand all the installation options for a particular model. Note: If the heat vents out the top or bottom of the fireplace, and not the front, then it must not be installed IN the wall.

Some In-Wall linear fireplaces may also be installed On-Wall. If the manufacturer supports this installation, the fireplace will come with some sort of wall-mount bracket. In some cases, the manufacturer will also provide end panels to cover unsightly screws and holes in the sides of the firebox, for a neater look when mounted On-Wall. If there are no wall-mount brackets, and no On-Wall instructions in the owners’ manual, then the fireplace is not designed to be mounted On-Wall.
